Unofficial MPlayer packages based on cygwin. These packages are made from CVS copies of mplayer with a custom patchset applied. You may also want to visit the official MPlayer website.

This is by far the most useful thing found on this website. Most of the other projects here are just pointless crap of interest to maybe one or two people in the universe. (well, mmine is pretty sweet...) And then, suddenly, bam! A nice installer package for a nice, trim (spartan), media player that gives Windows Media Player a run for it's money. Who knew?

Primary features of MPlayer:

  • dvd player
  • independance from 3rd party codecs (no need to download from divx.com to watch divx movies)
  • supports the same wide variety of files as MPlayer under linux
  • the same great performance you expect from MPlayer under linux
  • will someday replace Windows Media Player, Real Player, and Quicktime
  • console mencoder available for those brave enough to use it

A Changelog is available here.

Missing Things: (you can help contribute?)

  • vcd support
  • browser plugins
  • runtime audio track selection for mpeg files
  • playing encrypted VOBs from hard disk
  • joystick support
  • vfw tv tuner support

Questions: (exclamations)

Hey, I need to be notified about new packages!

Hey, I (like / don't like) Thing 1!

Try the mailing list to discuss what you want to see in the future from these packages. But first, you must sign up. The list is very low-traffic, so don't worry.

Hey, hurry up and show me to the downloads!

Fine, fine. Here:

latest MPlayer only package (2006 August 15, ~5.1Mb)
older MPlayer only package (2005 January 13, ~3.9Mb)
This package includes MPlayer only.

latest full MPlayer package (2006 August 15, ~19Mb)
older full MPlayer package (2005 January 13, ~15Mb)
This package includes MPlayer, MEncoder, binary codecs, and HTML documentation. It will allow you to choose which components you want to install.

patches & source!

2006 August 15
    patches: tarball (~20kb) or browse
    source: unpatched tarball (~8.3Mb) or
2005 January 13
    patches: tarball (~32kb) or browse
source: unpatched tarball (~6.9Mb) or patched tarball (~6.9Mb)
    configuration files: browse

These patches are not guaranteed to apply to anything other than the CVS mplayer/ffmpeg from that exact day. YMMV.

Older releases and the patchsets used to create them are no longer advertised here. Please upgrade.

Hey, I have trouble still!

Troubleshooting:

If your display is slow or MPlayer uses an insane amount of cpu time, you might try uncommenting the line "vf-add=noformat=yv12" in mplayer.ini to disable yv12 overlay. Many video card drivers report yv12 overlay support. Unfortunately, many drivers LIE TO YOU. My windows drivers do this. The card has no support for the yv12 colorspace, but instead the drivers do the conversion themselves. And they do it very slowly. Disabling yv12 overlay lets MPlayer do the conversion the fast way, saving you cpu time.

If your directx display still seems slower than it should be, perhaps your overlay is being stolen by Windows Media Player's preview in Explorer. Try disabling this embedded preview. Many people have reported that this helps.

To fix major directx problems, try disabling acceleration by uncommenting the line "vo=directx:noaccel". This should not be neccessary for most people, though.

Having trouble figuring out mencoder? Too bad. See MPlayer's homepage for help. You have to run mencoder from a command prompt, and you're on your own. Use at your own risk. It's included by demand only.

Hey, I hate you!

Fair enough. You may be happier running another MPlayer for windows project. You can see a complete list at the projects section of MPlayer's website.
